Public Seminar on ASEAN-Japan Strategic Partnership in Southeast Asia and Regional Community BuildingJune 17, 2013 ![]() On Tuesday, 11 June, a Public Seminar on ASEAN-Japan Strategic Partnership in Southeast Asia and Regional Community Building was held in Jakarta by Centre for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) of Indonesia and Japan Centre for International Exchange (JCIE). It was attended by researchers, diplomats and media representatives etc. Since last year, CSIS and JCIE as coordinators have established study groups among the researchers in ASEAN and Japan, and continued their discussions on ASEAN-Japan cooperation toward ASEAN Community Building. At the Seminar, coordinators of the study – Mr. Hitoshi Tanaka, Chairman of the Institute for International Strategy of Japan Research Institute and Senior Fellow of JCIE, and Mr. Jusuf Wanandi, Vice Chairman and Board of Trustees of CSIS - gave keynote speeches, followed by the presentations by the following co-chairs of 3 study groups and an active Q & A session. Political and Security Community --- Prof. Yoshihide Soeya, Director of Institute of East Asian Studies, Keio University Economic Community --- Prof. Tham Siew Yean, Professor and Principal Research Fellow, Institute of Malaysia and International Studies (IKMAS), University Kebangsaan Malaysia Social and Cultural Community --- Prof. Carolina Hernandez, Professor Emeritus, Univ. of the Philippines, Founding President and CEO Institute for Strategic and Development Studies (ISDS) Based on their studies as well as the result of the Seminar, the joint study group will finalize the report on the research theme for the first year – “ASEAN-Japan cooperation for ASEAN Community Building” and there will be a symposium in November this year in Tokyo to release the final report. The theme of the second year of their joint research, which was started on 12 June, is ASEAN-Japan cooperation for East Asia Community Building and Global Governance. This Joint research is supported by Japan-ASEAN Integration Fund (JAIF). |
