Opening of the Mission of Japan to ASEANH23-01 On 26 May, 2011, Japan has officially opened its Mission to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in Jakarta as the newest diplomatic entity of Japan. This is the second diplomatic mission to ASEAN from the non-ASEAN Member States. Japan became the very first “Dialogue Partner” for ASEAN immediately after the establishment of ASEAN in 1967. Since then, Japan and ASEAN have shared many commonalities such as cultures, ethnicities and customs as neighbors in Asia, and have been nurturing special relationship, which is often described as “Heart-to-Heart partnership”. ASEAN continues to show its remarkable growth in the global economy, and it is indispensable for the growth of Japanese economy. Today Japan and ASEAN have become irreplaceable partners for each other, with their cooperation in the political and security areas as well as cultural exchanges expanding year by year. The opening of the Mission is to demonstrate Japan’s determination to further strengthen the cooperative relationship between Japan and ASEAN and to develop and prosper together at home and abroad. The Mission is headed by H.E. Mr. Takio Yamada, Ambassador to ASEAN who is the first resident Ambassador to ASEAN in Jakarta from the non-ASEAN Member States.
