The 6th Meeting of ASEAN+3 Ministers Responsible for Culture and Arts

The 6th Meeting of ASEAN Plus Three (China, Japan and ROK) Ministers Responsible for Culture and Arts (AMCA+3) was held on 19 April 2014, in Hue, Viet Nam. The Japanese delegation was headed by H.E. Mr. Hakubun SHIMOMURA, Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan, and other delegation members including Mr. Kazushige YAMASHITA, Director-General, Culture Properties Department of Agency for Cultural Affairs and officials from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan, the Embassy of Japan in Viet Nam and the Mission of Japan to ASEAN. From the ASEAN side, H.E. Hoang Tuan Anh, Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Viet Nam, was the Chair of AMCA+3, and other ASEAN Ministers Responsible for Culture and Arts as well as Secretary-General of ASEAN attended the meeting, together with other officials from relevant ministries and the ASEAN Secretariat. China and ROK also attended the meeting at ministerial level.
In the meeting, where Japan had its Minister’s attendance for the first time, Mr. SHIMOMURA expressed his plan to further promote the cultural cooperation between ASEAN and Japan based on the outcomes of cultural exchanges implemented under the 40th anniversary of ASEAN-Japan Friendship and Cooperation and in accordance with the Vision Statement on ASEAN-Japan Friendship and Cooperation adopted at a Commemorative Summit held in December 2013.
In addition, the Inaugural Meeting of ASEAN Plus Japan Ministers Responsible for Culture and Arts (AMCA+Japan) was held on 20 April 2014 upon the request from Japan. In the meeting, Mr. SHIMOMURA introduced Japan’s new policy on cultural exchanges in Asia, announced in December 2013 under the name “WA Project –Toward Interactive Asia through Fusion and Harmony” as well as concrete proposals in the field of cultural exchange, developing human resources, copyright systems and student exchange. The ASEAN Ministers welcomed those proposals and looked forward to the promotion of cultural exchange between ASEAN and Japan through these initiatives. The ASEAN Ministers also expressed their appreciation for Japan’s contribution in the field of culture such as JENESYS2.0 program and cooperation in preserving cultural heritage assets.
