On 19 March, Mission of Japan to ASEAN in cooperation with the Faculty of Law of Pattimura University in Ambon held a public lecture entitled “The 40 years of ASEAN-Japan cooperation: To enhance the future partnership between Japan and ASEAN”. The public lecture was a part of the university’s newly established ASEAN Studies Centre’s programmes and was attended by approximately 150 students and 20 teaching staff.

In her lecture, Ms. Takako Ito, Minister-Counsellor of the Mission of Japan to ASEAN, explained about the relations between ASEAN and Japan as strategic partners in various fields. The lecture also discussed about the areas of partnership in the ASEAN-Japan cooperation, namely “Partners for Peace and Stability”, “Partners for Prosperity”, “Partners for Quality of Life” and “Heart-to-Heart Partners”, as well as specific initiatives and proposals for ASEAN-Japan cooperation.

The lecture was followed by Q&A sessions. The students and teaching staff of Pattimura University were particularly interested in the youth and lecturer exchange programmes as well as in projects related to Japanese culture and language learning for the people of Maluku.

The Mission of Japan to ASEAN intends to continue outreach activities, particularly at ASEAN Studies Centres in universities, to raise awareness of people in ASEAN about the ASEAN-Japan relations.
