The 3rd ASEAN Plus Three Education Ministers Meeting
1 June 2016
On 26 May 2016, The 3rd ASEAN Plus Three (Japan-China-Republic of Korea) Education Ministers Meeting was held in Selangor, Malaysia. Deputy Minister Kihei Maekawa, Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan, attended the meeting.
In the meeting, Japan, as the host of “ASEAN+3 Working Group on Mobility of Higher Education and Ensuring Quality Assurance of Higher Education”, reported on “the ASEAN Plus Three Guidelines on Transcripts for Student Exchanges and Mobility”. The Guidelines are essential to establish a common framework in the region in order to promote inter-university and student exchanges.
Japan also proposed to establish new guidelines, “the ASEAN Plus Three Guidelines on Transcripts for Exchange Students, including a comparison table of the credit transfer systems”, as a future plan. The draft guidelines will be discussed at the 4th Working Group, which will be held in September 2016 in the Philippines. Through these efforts, Japan would like to deepen its cooperation for the establishment of “Asian Higher Education Community.”
At the meeting, participants exchanged views on the present and future directions of ASEAN Plus Three cooperation on education, and the Joint Statement was adopted.
The 4th ASEAN Plus Three Education Ministers Meeting will be hosted by Myanmar in 2018.
