Visit to Japan by Junior Diplomats from CLMV Countries

Four junior diplomats from Cambodia, Lao PDR, Myanmar and Vietnam (CLMV Countries) will visit Japan on 21-26 June, 2011. They will meet Japanese Government officials, see Japan’s IT technologies and visit an automobile factory, and experience Japanese culture.

As a part of Japan’s assistance for CLMV countries to work with ASEAN, Japan has been providing financial assistance for the on-the-job training program under which junior diplomats from CLMV Countries can work in the ASEAN Secretariat as an officer of the Secretariat for one year. Among the alumni of this programme, which is now its 11th year, some have already become Director-General in charge of ASEAN in their home country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Thus, the CLMV Countries have given high appreciation to this programme and delivered deep gratitude to Japan.

Four people in the 11th Batch of the programme started to work in the ASEAN Secretariat in August last year, and since then they learned about ASEAN through their work in their respective post in the Secretariat. This time they are on a study tour to learn about Japan, which is ASEAN’s important dialogue partner, and scheduled to visit Tokyo, Kanagawa and Kyoto. They will go back to their home country in August and are expected to work actively in the bureau in charge of ASEAN.
