Special ASEAN Plus Three Summit on Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19)

On April 14, Mr. ABE Shinzo, Prime Minister of Japan, attended the Special ASEAN Plus Three Summit on Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) via video conference. In the conference, Prime Minister Abe announced Japan’s assistance to ASEAN consisting of three pillars: (1) strengthening infectious disease responsiveness, (2) the establishment of ASEAN Center for Infectious Diseases, and (3) strengthening the resiliency of ASEAN economy.
Prime Minister Abe noted that Japan will enhance cooperation on the development of medicines including Avigan as infection control measures. He also pointed out that it is necessary to facilitate trade of goods and services in accordance with WTO rules, and to eventually render the supply chain network centered on ASEAN resilient and sustainable.
Japan will continue to take leadership in its cooperation and coordination with ASEAN to curb and terminate the spread of COVID-19.
