ASEAN-Japan Symposium: Co-creation in an Era of Geoeconomics

On 11 November, the Mission of Japan to ASEAN, in collaboration with the Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA) and the Foreign Policy Community of Indonesia (FPCI), an Indonesian think tank, co-organized the "ASEAN-Japan Symposium: Co-creation in an Era of Geoeconomics." In addition to the Secretary-General, Deputy Secretary-General in charge of the Economic Community from the ASEAN Secretariat participated, along with ASEAN Permanent Representatives, Ambassadors and officials from various ASEAN Missions, more than 100 invitees participated in-person. The symposium was also live-streamed on YouTube and it was viewed by more than 500 people.
 
1. At the opening session, H.E. KIYA Masahiko, Ambassador of Japan to ASEAN, Dr. Aladdin D. Rillo, Managing Director for Policy Design and Operations of ERIA, and H.E. Gerard Ho Wei Hong, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Republic of Singapore to ASEAN (Country Coordinator for Japan), made opening remarks, followed by a keynote speech delivered by H.E. Dr. Kao Kim Hourn, Secretary-General of ASEAN.
 
2. Subsequently, in Session 1 "Upgrading Japan-ASEAN Cooperation through Co-creation," Prof. OHNO Izumi, Professor Emeritus and Adjunct Professor, National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies (GRIPS), Mr. Satvinder Singh, Deputy Secretary-General of ASEAN for ASEAN Economic Community, Ms. TAKEDA Sachiko, Chief Representative to ASEAN, JICA, and Dr. Nuki Agya Utama, Director for Energy Policy and Head of Asia Zero Emission Center, ERIA discussed how both ASEAN and Japan can achieve co-creation of a prosperous and sustainable economy and society, and how Japan, as a "trusted partner" of ASEAN, can leverage its strengths to jointly address regional and global challenges. The session was moderated by Dr. Dino Patti Djalal, Founder and Chairman of FPCI.
 
3. In the following Session 2 "ASEAN and Japan in the Era of Geoeconomics," H.E. Dyah Roro Esti Widya Putri, Vice Minister of Trade of Indonesia, Ms. Marie Sherylyn Aquia, Director of Bureau of International Trade Relations, Department of Trade and Industry of the Philippines, Mr. Masuo Kuremura, Special Advisor to the Minister for ASEAN and Asia Pacific Affairs at Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) / Executive Director for Asia-Pacific, Japan External Trade Organization(JETRO), Singapore, and ⁠Ms. Shinta Kamdani, Chairman of APINDO and CEO of Sintesa Group took the stage to exchange views on how ASEAN and Japan can strengthen cooperation, leveraging the solid foundation of economic cooperation they have built so far, and how they can address current challenges and explore new cooperation in the era of geoeconomic transformation. The session was moderated by Dr. Dionisius A. Narjoko, Senior Economist, ERIA.
 
4. Finally, closing remarks were delivered by Dr. Dino Patti Djalal and Ambassador Kiya, expressing gratitude to the participants and speakers of the symposium, and stating their determination to further develop ASEAN-Japan relations, taking this symposium as an opportunity.
