2025/10/10
On October 8, the Mission of Japan to ASEAN, in collaboration with the think-tank Foreign Policy Community of Indonesia (FPCI), hosted a public lecture titled "Japan's Security Cooperation with ASEAN: Evolution, Challenges, and Implications for the Indo-Pacific Regional Order," featuring Professor YUZAWA Takeshi of Hosei University.
Professor YUZAWA provided insightful commentary on the evolution, challenges, and prospects of ASEAN-Japan security cooperation. He referenced specific examples of Japan's security cooperation, including the Japan-ASEAN Ministerial Initiative for Strengthening Defense Cooperation (JASMINE Initiative: 2023) and Official Security Assistance (OSA).
In his opening remarks, Ambassador KIYA touched upon the importance of stability and peace in the ASEAN region and Japan's security cooperation. He stated that amidst rapid and profound changes in the global order, today's lecture would provide an invaluable opportunity to explore what more Japan can do together with ASEAN to contribute to the region's peace, stability, and prosperity. He also expressed that Japan remains firmly committed to supporting ASEAN's security through promoting FOIP, making use of various policy tools.
The lecture was held in a hybrid format and was attended by many participants including members of the diplomatic corps and ASEAN Secretariat officials, researchers and students.
