ERIA and ASEAN-IPR Kick-Off Roundtable on Women and Security (WPS) and Women in the Digital Economy (WDE) and a video message by Ms KAMIKAWA Yoko, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan

On June 19, ERIA and ASEAN-IPR Kick-Off Roundtable on Women and Security (WPS) and Women in the Digital Economy (WDE) was held in Jakarta, Indonesia, and Ms. KAMIKAWA Yoko, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, delivered a video message at the roundtable.
 
In her video message, she stressed that she has been dedicated to promoting the WPS agenda before assuming Foreign Minister and has highlighted the importance of WPS at every opportunity during her visit to Southeast Asia last October. FM KAMIKAWA reiterated that societies that have achieved gender equality and women’s active participation tend to experience higher economic growth rates. In this context, FM KAMIKAWA stated that this roundtable is important in terms of deepening the understanding on how we can combine the ever-evolving digital economy and WPS to achieve synergies in economic development and women’s empowerment, thereby realizing inclusive and sustainable development in ASEAN. FM KAMIKAWA also expressed her hope that this joint study between ASEAN-IPR and ERIA will further promote gender equality and women’s empowerment in the digital economy and contribute to the WPS agenda.
 
The roundtable was initiated by Prof YAMANAKA Akiko, Special Advisor to the President of ERIA and attended by relevant officials and experts such as from ERIA, ASEAN and other international organizations. Following the opening remarks by H.E. WATANABE Tetsuya, President of ERIA, FM KAMIKAWA and H.E. I Gusti Ayu Bintang Darmawati, Minister for Women's Empowerment and Child Protection of Indonesia, delivered video messages respectively. H.E. Bovonethat Douangchak, Permanent Representative of Lao PDR to ASEAN, and H.E. Ambassador I Gusti Agung Wesaka Puja, Executive Director of ASEAN-IPR, also made remarks. H.E. Indra Gunawan, Acting Deputy Minister for Women's Empowerment and Child Protection of Indonesia, and H.E. Ing Kantha Phavi, Minister of Women Affairs of Cambodia (video message), also delivered key-note speeches, stressing the importance of making efforts in WPS agenda with a view to promoting the development of digital economy in the region. Active discussions among panelists and participants thereafter took place as to how concrete cooperation should be conducted in the areas of WPS and WDE agenda.
