The Commemorative Symposium for the 50th Year of ASEAN-Japan Friendship and Cooperation

 On 13 February, the Mission of Japan to ASEAN organised the Commemorative Symposium for the 50th Year of ASEAN-Japan Friendship and Cooperation co-hosted with Foregin Policy Community of Indonesia (FPCI) in a hybrid format, as a kick-off event of the 50th Year of ASEAN-Japan Friendship and Cooperation.

1     In the opening session, Dr. Dino Patti Djalal, Founder and Chairman of FPCI and H.E. Dr. Kao Kim Hourn, the Secretary-General of ASEAN made his opening remarks, followed by screening of video messages from H.E. Mr. HAYASHI Yoshimasa, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, H.E. Ms. Retno Lestari Priansari Marsudi, Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia, and H.E. Mr. Don Pramudwinai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Thailand. 

2     Then, the discussants, including Dr. OBA Mie (Professor at Kanagawa University and the Chairperson of Expert Panel for the 50th Year of ASEAN-Japan Friendship and Cooperation), Dr. AIZAWA Nobuhiro (Associate Professor at Kyushu University and a Member of the Expert Panel), Dr. Marty Natalegawa (Former Foreign Minister of Indonesia), Mr. Satvinder Singh (Deputy Secretary-General for ASEAN Economic Community), Mr. ARIMA Yutaka (DG of Southeast and Southwest Asian Affairs Department, MOFA of Japan), and other academics and international practitioners shared their constructive views on how to make the most of AOIP cooperation, as well as ASEAN-led mechanisms and initiatives in order to realise a sustainable and resilient society and regional peace and stability for the Epicentrum of Growth. 

3    In closing, Ambassador Kiya concluded the symposium by stating his appreciation to those people and discussants who attended and made great contributions, as well as expressing his determination to further strengthen ASEAN-Japan relationship, while highlighting the 50th Year of AESAN-Japan Friendship and Cooperation in the wake of this commemorative symposium. 

4     About 180 including 20 students and a number of high-level participants attended the event, such as Dr. Kao, the Secretary-General of ASEAN, Mr. Sidharto (DG for ASEAN Cooperation, MOFA of Indonesia), two Deputy Secretary-Generals of ASEAN, and many Permanent Representatives to ASEAN and Ambassadors of Dialogue Partners/diplomatic missions. The symposium was also livestreamed on YouTube. During the reception luncheon after the symposium, various foods including dishes of Japan and various ASEAN countries were served, and participants enjoyed them.
