On 2nd November, Mr. KODAMA, Charge d’affaires ad interim delivered his welcome remarks at the "Talk show on Food Value Chain and Innovation," an online event jointly organised by the ASEAN Secretariat and Insitut Pertanian Bogor.

The opening remarks were delivered by Mr. KINOSHITA Hiroaki, Project Coordinator, ASEAN Secretariat, Prof. Noer Azam Achsanri, Dean of School of Business, Insitut Pertanian Bogor. Ms. Melody Nurramdhani Laksani, ASEAN Goodwill Ambassador on Food and Agriculture, Mr. NISHIMURA Tsutomu, JICA Expert, and Drh. Chechep Wahyudin, CEO of Etanee also made remarks at the occasion.

Referring to the ASEAN+3 Agriculture and Forestry Ministers' Meeting this year, which emphasised the importance of using digital technology in the food and agriculture sector, Mr. KODAMA expressed his wish for the participating university students that the young generation would play an active role in Indonesia and ASEAN countries in the agricultural sector, utilising those new technologies. He also introduced “Specified Skilled” residency status to utilise their skills in Japan.

Ms. Melody said that she would like to promote attractiveness of agriculture to the younger generation, as an entertainer, and Mr. Nishimura said that it was important for farmer groups to make efforts to improve quality needed by the market, seeking for suitable markets for their products.

Drh. Chechep pointed out that the price of poultry meat was higher than in developed countries due to the inadequacy of the food value chain, although labour costs are relatively low here. He showed an example of how his company had been able to reduce food losses and lower prices by using digital technology and the cold chain. The event attracted around 160 students.

The event was organised as part of the activities of the ASEAN Cooperation Project “Human Resources Development Project in Food Related Areas through Partnership Program with Universities in ASEAN Region – Phase 3” funded by Japan's Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.
