Ambassador Chiba’s participation in the signing ceremony of the Memorandum of Understanding between the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA) and the Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA)

On January 22, 2020, H.E. CHIBA Akira, Ambassador of Japan to ASEAN, attended the signing ceremony of the “Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to Develop AIPA's Capacity on Matters Concerning ASEAN Economic Community and ASEAN Economic Integration in Various Areas” between the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA) and the Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA).

Hon Nguyen Tuong Van, Secretary General of AIPA, and Professor NISHIMURA Hidetoshi, the President of ERIA, signed the MoU and in the presence of Ambassador Chiba and H.E. Dato Lim Jock Hoi, Secretary General of ASEAN. Afterwards, the participants delivered remarks as follows.
 
  1. Secretary General Lim touched upon the important role of ERIA by providing academic inputs and that of AIPA by its efforts to gain supports from parliamentarians of the ASEAN Member States, and expressed his expectation that the signed MoU would accelerate further activities.
 
  1. Ambassador Chiba mentioned that the relationship between Japan and AIPA as well as the relationship between Japan and ASEAN would be strengthened by concrete measures taken by the Government of Japan and AIPA through ERIA in such fields as countermeasures against marine plastic debris under cooperative relationship between AIPA and ERIA.
 
  1. President Nishimura stated that relationship between ERIA and AIPA has been strengthened since the first MoU was signed in 2016, and that ERIA is planning to hold a joint dialogue this year to discuss issues of marine plastic debris inviting AIPA parliamentarians and members of Japan’s Parliamentary League for ERIA.
 
  1. Secretary General Nguyen expressed her expectation that this MoU would lead to the development of AIPA's capacity on matters concerning the ASEAN Economic Community and ASEAN economic integration as well as the formulation of recommendations on economic policies, and emphasized that the MoU would contribute to the development of relationship between Japan and ASEAN.
